I went out to the warehouse and grabbed one of the 6-Pole Square Trailer Wiring Connectors, item # 37995, and all of the wires are the same 18 gauge wires. I agree with you that a larger wire would be the best way to go for installation of a power wire to a trailer. The 18 gauge wiring is used to match the trailer wiring these connectors are installed on.

If all of the lights are dim on your trailer wiring that would indicate to me that it's not grounding properly to allow the lights to function. First thing to check would be the main ground wire of the trailer's wiring harness. Make sure it's connected to a clean metal surface on the trailer frame. You can also run jumper wires from the ground wires of the light assemblies back to this circuit to improve the ground as well.

The outside diameter of the Jacketed 6 Wire, item # DW04906-1, trailer cable is 1/2 inch. 14 gauge wire could be used for the brake and 12 volt power wires as long as the amperage requirement is not too high. The temperature coating on the wires in the 6 wire cable is good to 176 degrees Fahrenheit.

That's a very good question, we tend to be extra cautious and say to use 10 gauge wire because that would be more than enough. When you get into longer trailers that will end up using a lot of wire the heavier gauge wire becomes more necessary. On a smaller trailer with a single axle of brakes 12 gauge wire would probably be enough. But for a longer tandem axle trailer I would recommend you run 10 gauge wire to all the assemblies just to minimize the amount of resistance that would be on... view full answer...

I can help you determine which wires go to which functions for your trailer, though there is no way to determine this by color; the reason for that is functions are not determined by the color of the wire and there isn't a universal standard for this.
So in order to determine the functions for your trailer use a separate 12 volt battery and run a jumper wire in order to apply power to the circuit which will tell you the functions of each wire.

I can help you figure out how to determine how to hook up your connector, though you cannot use colors to determine the functions of trailer wiring (or any wiring) because there is no universal color code, as helpful as that might be. What you need to do is test the wires for function using a charged 12 volt battery and a jumper cable, applying 12 volts to each wire which is going to tell you what their functions are; that will allow you to hook up your new connector.
